SAN SALVADOR, EL SALVADOR
Although the city was founded on April 1, 1525, San Salvador was rebuilt and changed locations twice in 1528 and 1545. El Salvador achieved independence from Spain in 1821 and from the Central American Federation in 1839. A 12-year civil war, which cost 75,000 lives, ended in 1992 when government and leftist rebels signed a treaty that resulted in military and political reform.
