SISTER CITIES OF LOS ANGELES
“CULTURAL DAY AT THE GROVE”

OVER 100 INTERNATIONAL MUSICIANS, DANCERS, AND SINGERS
TO PERFORM FOR FREE AT THE GROVE AT FARMERS MARKET

(Los Angeles, CA, June 22, 2010)—The City of Los Angeles will celebrate the 51st anniversary of Sister Cities of Los Angeles with “CULTURAL DAY AT THE GROVE” on SUNDAY, JUNE 27, from 1pm to 5pm at THE GROVE AT FARMERS MARKET.

Over 100 MUSICIANS, DANCERS, AND SINGERS from many of the twenty-five Sister Cities will perform for free on the stage in The Grove’s outdoor park.

Participating cities include Nagoya, Japan; Eilat, Israel; Jakarta, Indonesia; Beirut, Lebanon; Mumbai, India; Taipei, Taiwan; Berlin, Germany; Mexico City, Mexico; Lusaka, Zambia; and Salvador, Brazil.

Individual routines will average 15 minutes and include DANCE GROUPS from Indonesia, Taiwan, Lebanon, and Mumbai; DRUM ENSEMBLES from Nagoya and Lusaka; Berlin’s recreation of 1930s GERMAN CABARETS; and Mexico City’s Tenor of the Americas, MAXIMO. Ken O’Malley, the Irish singer and leader of the Twilight Lords, will be the event’s emcee.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower created the Sister Cities program in 1956 to build people-to-people relationships among Sister Cities and increase cultural understanding and awareness. Sister Cities of Los Angeles was formed in 1959 with Nagoya, Japan, and Eilat, Israel. Today, Sister Cities of Los Angeles is a major force in international relations and trade with 25 cities.


Cultural Day at The Grove is coordinated by the office of Tom LaBonge, President of Sister Cities of Los Angeles, Inc., and Councilmember of the 4th District. The official Cultural Day sponsors are The Grove, Farmers Market, The Professional Development Center of Glendale Community College, and Indian Motorcycle Los Angeles.
